Current and Future Projects

In the 2015/2016 Season Julia Kleiter will have two role debuts. "Eva" in Wagner´s Meistersinger at the Staatsoper Berlin with Daniel Barenboim and "Fiordiligi" at the Opernhaus Zürich with Karl-Heinz Steffens. "Eva" she will also sing in Paris under Phillipe Jordan and Fiordiligi at the Salzburg Festival. There will be recitals together with Christoph Prégardien and Julius Drake at the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg and the Wiener Konzerthaus.

Future projects include "Contessa" in Le nozze di Figaro and "Lisa" in "Das Land des Lächelns" (Lehar) in a new production in Zürich and also her role-debut as Freischütz-Agathe at the Scala in Milan.

 
 
 
 

 

Musical Education

Julia Kleiter was born in Limburg an der Lahn in Germany.  Her early musical education was shaped by her participation in the Limburger Domchor and Mädchenkantorei, which she joined at the age of six years. 

She studied voice at the Musikhochschule of Hamburg and Cologne with William Workman and Klesie Kelly-Moog.

Julia made a name for herself early on as a concert singer and in 2003 Semyon Bychkov hired her as the "First Maid" in Strauss's "Daphne" for several concerts and a CD release. 

 

 
 
 
 

 

Opera Engagements

Her operatic debut, as Pamina, was in Bob Wilson's "Magic Flute" at the Paris Opera under Jiri Kout.  This was followed by more engagements as Pamina in Madrid and Paris under Marc Minkowski, as Papagena in Reggio Emilia, Ferrara, and Modena under Claudio Abbado, Xenia in "Boris Godunov" under Semyon Bychkov in Florence, and her debut with the Opernhaus Zürich as Guinia in Johann Christian Bach's "Lucio Silla" under Theodor Guschelbaur. 

 A return to Zürich as Serpetta in Mozart's "La Finta Giardinera" under Nikolaus Harnoncourt was the catalyst to an important collaborative relationship with Mo. Harnoncourt resulting in many projects to follow;  Pamina in Zürich, Ilia in Mozart's "Idomeneo" in Graz and Zürich, as well as numerous concerts including her first Mozart's "c- minor Mass".

 2006 saw Ms. Kleiter debuting as Susanna in "Le Nozze di Figaro" in Verona and Reggio Emilia and her debut as Celia in Moazart's "Lucio Silla" with director Jürgen Flimm in the hallowed ground of Venice's "Teatro la Fenice" followed by the Salzburg Festival.

Later that summer, she was heard in Mozart's "Betulia Liberata" as Amital and also Mozart's "Vesperae de Solennes de Confessore" under Riccardo Muti in Salzburg. 

She concluded her summer season with performances of Mozart's "Magic Flute" (Pamina) under Claudio Abbado at the Edinburgh Festival. 

Highlights of recent seasons include;  Sophie in "Der Rosenkavalier" in Zürich under Franz Welser-Moest", Dresden under Fabio Luisi, and at the Deutsche Oper Berlin under Donald Runnicles.  Zdenka in "Arabella" again in Zürich and Berlin, Marzelline in Beethoven's "Fidelio" under Claudio Abbado in Reggio Emilia, Madrid, Baden-Baden, as well as a new production at the Paris Opera.  Ännchen in "Der Freischütz" under Thomas Hengelbrock and Bob Wilson in Baden-Baden, Euridice in Glueck's "Orfeo ed Euridice" in the Pina Bausch production at the Paris Opera which was recorded for DVD.  Julia made her Metropolitan Opera debut as Pamina in the Julie Taymor production of "Magic Flute" in 2010.

In 2012 she gave her debut at the Lyric Opera of Chicago as Almirena in Händel's "Rinaldo" under Harry Bicket, sang Zdenka in Paris under Phillip Jordan and opened the Season of the Salzburg Festival as Pamina under Nikolaus Harnoncourt.

In 2013 she gave her debut as Donna Elvira in Mozart´s "Don Giovanni" at the Oper Zürich under the beton of Fabio Luisi and the direction of Sebastian Baumgarten. She also had a big success at the Tonhalle Zürich as Peri in Robert Schumann´s "Das Paradies und die Peri" also under Fabio Luisi.

In 2014 she sang again Pamina at the Opera Bastille Paris under the beton of Philippe Jordan and in the Summer she appeared at the Salzburg Festival as Emma in Schubert´s "Fierabras" conducted by Ingo Metzmacher, directed by Peter Stein. 

 

 
 
 
 

 

Concerts and Recitals

As a concert singer, Ms. Kleiter is greatly acclaimed in the music of Bach, Händel, and Mozart.  She has been heard internationally and in the most important venues under the baton of conductors such as;  Helmuth Rilling, Rene Jacobs, Jeffrey Tate, Ingo Metzmacher, Mark Minkowski, Nicolas Mc Gegan, Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Muti, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Philippe Jordan, Fabio Luisi and Zubin Metha.

She is very passionate about preserving the art of recital and has been heard in various programs together with pianist, Michael Gees at the Vienna Musikverein, the Mozarteum Salzburg, the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg, the Styriarte Festival in Graz Austria, and the Lucerne Festival. 

She has sung numerous recitals of Hugo Wolf's "Italienisches Liederbuch" together with Christoph Pregardien and pianist, Hilko Dumno.  The trio went on to record a highly praised CD of the program which was nominated for the Gramophone Award as well as the BBC Music Magazine Award in 2011.

Julia Kleiter currently resides in Germany with her husband Eric Cutler and their children Henry and Fiona.
